San Antonio warned of minor flooding Monday as rain expected all week
The National Weather Service put San Antonio and the South Central Texas area under a hazardous weather outlook warning as pockets of rain and thunderstorms could lead to minor flooding Monday afternoon and into tonight. Continuing off of last week’s heavy rainfall, isolated and scattered rain is expected throughout the rest of this week.
The hazardous weather outlook says the San Antonio area east of I-35 can expect a possible heat index ranging from 102 to 106 degrees, despite an anticipated high of 95 degrees. Later this afternoon, NWS says scattered showers and thunderstorms “will be capable producing pockets of heavy rainfall” that could lead to minor flooding.
Elevated rain chances are expected Tuesday and Wednesday that could lead to more heavy rainfall, dropping about 2 inches of rain in San Antonio. The NWS seven-day forecast for San Antonio says there is a 50% chance for rain up until Friday where chances will drop to 30%.
High temperatures will linger in the low 90s until Thursday, where the anticipated high is 89 degrees and should hang around 90 degrees on Friday.
With rain bringing puddles of stagnant water, Bexar County will push its mosquito abatement campaign Monday morning after West Nile Virus was discovered in a pool of mosquitoes in the county last week.
Here’s what the Bexar County website says people can do to avoid mosquito bites.
- Use insect repellent with these active ingredients: DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, para-menthane-diol, or 2-undecanone.
- Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants if possible.
- For extra protection, treat clothing with permethrin.
- Use screens on open windows and doors.
- Use air conditioning in a home or building if available.
- Keep mosquitoes from laying eggs by dumping (or covering) pools of standing water.
